Douglas had exercised at commercial gyms for years, but he was getting nowhere.
When Covid struck, his health and fitness suffered like so many people.
Fed up with seeing little progress and craving some fundamental change, 43-year-old Douglas came to Ultimate Performance.
Having a goal-focused program, world-class expertise and personalised support behind him helped him achieve results he could have never imagined.
He lost 9kg (20lbs) and developed the purpose, knowledge and discipline with his diet and training that years of toiling in a commercial gym never could.
“U.P. is a results-based gym. They deserve their reputation in that respect.
“It’s a culture of support, and I can really feel and sense that as a client, everyone really wants you to succeed, which is unique and something that you can’t create artificially. It’s got to be genuine.
“It really does inspire you to push on and achieve your goals.”
It was friends who first got Douglas thinking about U.P.
He had always been sporty, but he had lost that spark for exercise.
However, U.P.’s reputation and results-driven approach turned his head. He thought it would be the ideal way for him to reignite the fire for working out and achieve actual results.
“I’ve always been someone who’s kept relatively fit. I played sport at a decent level but, like a lot of people, I let myself go a little bit and started getting back into the gym.
“The problem I found was that I wasn’t quite motivated. I was going to the gym at lunchtime and finding myself not wanting to break a sweat because they don’t have a shower, and clearly, that’s never going to work. So I decided to start taking it seriously.
“I’d heard good things about U.P., and I understand they are a results-based gym, so I got in touch, and the rest is history, as they say.”
The moment Douglas walked through the doors at U.P., he could see it was worlds apart from anything he had experienced before.
Everything was focused on him as a client, so he could achieve the best results possible.
“I’ve only got experience of commercial gyms.
“When I’ve gone to commercial gyms, I find that half of the people in there are too busy exercising their mouths rather than their muscles, and it’s very easy to get caught up in that a little bit, and you don’t have the same level of focus and attention to the finer details.
“Coming into U.P., it’s a serious business, and from that point of view, it’s chalk and cheese. I still go to a commercial gym, but the vibe, intensity and focus here is just another level altogether.”
Needless to say, the results have been phenomenal.
His body shape has transformed, and he is stronger, fitter and healthier than ever.
“The only downside is none of my shirts or suits fit me anymore. I’ve got to buy a new wardrobe.
“In regards to my general personal well-being, it certainly helped because it’s given me a target, a purpose and also discipline.
“The discipline applied to any walk of life is only ever a good thing. But during Covid, I let that slide and slip a little bit, and it has put me back on the straight and narrow.
“So obviously being fitter, healthier and stronger, all these things can only help in every other walk of life as well.”
One of the things that kept Douglas laser-focused from the start was setting a photoshoot as a goal.
Sceptical at first, he says it gave him the extra push and motivation to maximise his efforts in the gym.
Now he has a memento to show his children and grandchildren about what he was able to achieve.
“I wasn’t keen on a photoshoot as I find it a bit uncomfortable and awkward and because I had that tunnel vision approach to getting below 10% body fat.
“I’m pleased I did it because, in regards to my training, it gave me an extra 5-10% incentive. It’s nice as a keepsake because I’ll tell people I did this, and no one would believe me if I don’t have photographic evidence, so I can show my grandchildren one day that this is what grandpops used to look like.”
The supportive and friendly culture at U.P. played an important role in helping Douglas in his transformational journey along with discipline and constant motivation.
With these key ingredients, U.P. helped him banish his excuses and transformed his life outside the gym as well.
“U.P. is a results-based gym, and as much as clients will lean on their trainers for results, ultimately, it really is down to us and our commitment.
“The moment I stopped bullshitting and pretending that I wasn’t eating certain things or doing a certain amount of steps is the moment, I started to see the transformations.
“Obviously, all we need to do is trust the process and listen and follow the advice, and then the magic happens thereafter. It’s as simple as that.”
