Mike Loses 40kg

The cold, hard facts make for uncomfortable reading – but they need to be faced.

You will die younger – Being overweight cuts your life expectancy by 3 years. Being severely obese cuts your life expectancy by 10 years.

You face a greater risk of cancer – Obesity is responsible for up to 10% of cancer cases and is believed to cause at least 13 different types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, liver, bowel, stomach and uterus and ovary.

You will be more likely to die from heart disease – Coronary heart disease risk increases 32% in people who are overweight and 81% in people classed as obese. The condition can lead to heart attacks, heart failure and strokes.

Your danger of death or severe disability from stroke is higher – A stroke – where the blood supply to your brain is cut off – is one of the world’s biggest killers and causes of long-term disability. Your risk of suffering a stroke increases by 22% if you are overweight. This risk almost triples if you are obese.

Your chance of developing type-2 diabetes is greater – People who are obese are 7 times more likely to develop the disease, which can cause of raft of serious health complications including heart disease, stroke, vision problems, nerve and kidney damage and dementia.

Your dementia and Alzheimer’s risk will rise – People who were overweight at middle age were 71% more likely to develop dementia. For obese middle-aged people, their risk rose fourfold. Alarmingly, people overweight during middle age were 95% more likely to develop Alzheimer’s, with obese middle-aged people 343% more likely to have the condition in later life.

You will face a bigger threat of severe illness or death from Covid-19 – Patients who are obese had a 40% increased risk of dying from Covid-19 while being severely obese increased that risk to 90%.

You will be more susceptible to depression and mental health issues – Obese people were 45% more likely to suffer from depression compared to people of a healthy weight.
